It seems like this weekend’s Movie selection was full of choices no one really wanted but was compelled to see either way. In one hand you have the conclusion of a 20 year movie arc that has 2 iterations with the same timeline in Dark Phoenix, which is supposed to be the conclusion of the X-Men story. In the other hand you have Secret Life of Pets 2. The sequel to the movie that had an excellent concept (similar to Toy Story) from the perspective of pets, but really failed to deliver actually telling the story.
Both movies underperformed this weekend at the box office but if you really need to know the reason Pets 2 took the top spot the answer is very easy. Kids. Both movies scored poorly with critics and audiences, but kids don’t care anything about that. They want to see cute household pets doing crazy things and living a funny story about their secret lives. The fact that the consensus of poor storytelling doesn’t matter to them. As far as the box office is concerned, it’s more tickets sold for the cute pet movie then the ultra violent heavy emotional story of the Phoenix Saga.
Dark Phoenix brought in $33M Domestically driving a $100M loss to the “Fox” as the movie came in well below expectations, projections, and fans hopes and dreams. The finale arc of the X-Men series scored a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- Cinemascore. The reason this movie came in at #2 is fans of the series were compelled to ride the saga out. Have to love the faithful right?
